Blackest Night 3: murder, mayhem and zombies!

Just in time for the spookiest holiday of the year, we have another installment of the incredible Blackest Night saga running through D.C. Comics right now. The first two issues of this series have not disappointed, and this issue is no exception to the rule so far. If you're looking for a comic with murder, horror, zombies, aliens, and people in spiffy spandex costumes, you're most likely feeling the Halloween spirit.

Or just like the previous issues of Blackest Night to date.

This issue moved along the plot quite nicely, with another mid-level hero dying horribly at the hands of the power-blasting super-zombies that have invaded the earth, and another rising to the forefront to try and fight them. And in the midst of all this, we get a big bag of exposition explaining just what the Black Lanterns - these zombified heroes and villains and whatnot - really are. And how you can kill them!

While this is all well and good, a few clunky bits seem to mar the otherwise awesome proceedings, such as a pointless exchange between Green Lantern and the Flash before the former is whisked away to fight more zombies out in space... thus leaving the earth high and dry. This seemed to be a means of building on the 'character' of these two heroes' friendship, but it falls flat when the whole point of their tiff is rendered moot.

But this little weirdness aside, the Blackest Night saga is nonetheless a fun one, and besides... what's a line-wide crossover story without a few speed bumps along the way? That and again, it's coming out with perfect timing: creepy zombies going around and eating super heroes - perfect fodder for Halloween mood-making. Not to mention an awesome factory of ideas for Halloween costumes.

Why be Superman when you can be Zombie Superman?

If you dig super heroes at all, particularly those of the D.C. variety, you really ought to be picking up this series. Don't wait till it's collected in a trade, 'cause it's just that much fun. You can likely still find this one at your local comic book store still (this Examiner is a week or so behind in reviewing this particular issue), and if not, issue 4 should be coming out pretty soon.
