To supplement my article Hookah bars- the new singles scene I decided to launch my new feature Try this. In my last article I gave you the who and the where, and now I'll provide you with the what.  With your newfound knowledge of the best hookah bars in DC I expect you're eager to go out and try those hot spots for singles but aren't quite sure if you're ready to dazzle the socks off of that handsome guy who keeps eyeing you from the corner or that sexy girl sitting with her friends that you are trying to get the nerve to get up and talk to.  Never fear, I'll armor you with the tricks of the trade.

Tobacco flavor:

When it comes to choosing a flavor a lot of people are so bombarded with choices that they can't seem to decide.  If you see someone struggling for a flavor choice this is your chance to quip up and suggest something, "well my favorite flavor is..."  It's quite easy to become a shisha connoisseur, especially with all of the fun flavors and combinations out there.  Here are a few of my favorite combos:

Chocolate & mint: This flavor is extremely rich but satisfying. With holidays coming up it would make a great party favor for friends that may own a hookah of their own.

Banana & coconut: I had fun mixing these flavors together, especially during the summer months. It reminded me of a pina colada- yummy!

Coca cola & cherry: If you’re a fan of cherry coke, this flavor is a must try!

Pumpkin & cinnamon: I haven’t tried this flavor yet, nor have I seen it at the hookah bars but I know it’s out there and with the holidays quickly approaching I would love to try it!

There are so many flavor combinations that it’s near impossible to try everything. I challenge you to push the edge and create flavors so tantalizing that single guy or girl beside you can't resist trying it for themselves.

Smoke tricks:

Another great way to get yourself noticed or a converation started at a hookah bar is to learn to successfully perform any number of smoking tricks.  My knowledge of several smoking tricks has been the perfect conversation starter on numerous occasions.

Big smoke rings:  I know, I know, they look really hard to do but in actuality they are quite simple.  I mastered the big rings fairly quickly but the key to success is practice, practice, practice.  Begin by inhaling your shisha smoke.  As you exhale make sure your lips are parted and form a large O. As you begin to slowly exhale, push the smoke out of your mouth with the back of your throat.  To do this try make the sound 'ugh' without moving your lips.  This causes your windpipe to vibrate, pushing the smoke out of your throat and mouth, where they pass through your O shaped mouth causing O shaped smoke circles to emerge.

Small smoke rings:  These smoke rings aren't as common but they are just as impressive, if not more impressive than the big smoke rings.  Start by lightly inhaling smoke.  As you go to exhale make sure your lips are forming a tiny O (stick the tip of your pinky to your lips and press your lips around it- that's how small the hole should be).  As you slowly exhale tap lightly on the hollow part of your cheek (in the middle between the jaw and the cheek bone).  The tapping motion should cause tiny smoke rings to escape from your mouth.  Once you master the small O's you can begin to tap on your cheek more quickly, causing a fast succession of rings.  You can also begin to tap your cheek with hard objects, such as a hookah hose, seen below:

Smoke bubbles:  This is fun, but messy, so be sure to ask the staff first before you try this in a hookah bar as some places won't allow it.  Fill a cup with soapy water.  Spread some of the water across the table.  Arming yourself with a straw, find an area of the table with suds.  Inhale some smoke and exhale it through the straw.  The bubbles will fill up with smoke, providing you with enjoyable entertainment.  Grab that cutie at the table across from you and challenge him or her to see who can make the biggest bubble!

Now that you are armored with delicious flavor ideas and entertaining tricks, I expect to see you the next time I get a craving for shisha and head to the hookah bar!
