It seems that a newer and better social networking site pops up every few years to upstage the buzz surrounding the site previously in the limelight.  Today, that site is Facebook.  Popping into our lives over four years ago, Facebook provided a family-like community for college students. When Facebook first became available it was only open to a limited number of schools and only those who could confirm having a college email address were allowed to create an account.  Rural schools and the uneducated alike felt snubbed, being intentionally forced to remain at old school networking sites like Myspace and Livejournal.

Over time Facebook opened its arms wide for the entire college community, and then surprisingly, everyone.  Those who felt that Facebook had been too elite or too revolutionary stayed at Myspace and many people decided to keep their Myspace accounts open in addition to their Facebook accounts (myself included- I love my social networking sites!)  Even in the limelight, Facebook and social networking sites alike have become the object of pop culture satire, such as South Park and Stuff White People Like.

Sites like Myspace and Facebook are a great way to keep up with friends, family, colleagues, and peers.  They are also great sites for singles.  Sure, it's not really kosher to browse through profiles in search of a single hottie with a personality to message in hopes of snagging a date but it is a great way to keep in touch with someone you met in the city.  At bars, parties, dinners, and just about everywhere I go, I frequently hear "Do you have Facebook?  Great, let me get your info and we can keep in touch".   People who hate on social networking sites (believe me, they're out there) should consider what a wonder they did to mobilize President-Elect Obama's supporters and should consider how to use these sites to their own advantage.  It's not called 'social networking' for nothing!  Since you're already on your Facebook page (c'mon, I would be too if I wasn't at work), go ahead and add your friendly DC Singles Examiner!
