It's that time again- yes, the dreaded holiday shopping season. Even though we are a few weeks shy of Thanksgiving it is important to begin cumulating ideas for holiday gifts. It's never too early to start shopping and chances are if you are like me and every other young single and attached persons that I know you are without a doubt clueless about what to get that cutie you've been crushing on, your recently new bf or gf or, gasp, that person you've been in a relationship with for months or even years now. It's normal to feel that way- holiday gift giving can be a stressful time even when you know more about the person than their own mother does. Generic gifts? You don't want to be THAT guy or gal. This year give gifts that are thoughtful and well liked by your recipients.
Secret Santa fun: Secret Santa gifts are usually generic and boring because of the very cheap maximum limit- often no more than $20. If you get creative, you can turn these small gifts into something memorable. My freshman year in college I was a secret Santa with a maximum limit of $10. I purchased a teddy bear with our school logo on the front but felt that just presenting the gift alone was too boring, so I created it into a game. I gave him a card with a clue leading him to another spot with another clue and so on until he was finally led back into my room to find the bear in my fridge! It was a blast and made a cheap secret Santa gift worth so much more!
Go, Barack, Go: With our historical election success so close to Christmas I am sure this year there will be a spike in political gifts- and that's fine by me! A colleague at work mentioned she stocked up on magazines and newspapers declaring Senator Obama's win on November 5th and is planning on framing the covers and passing out as gifts. Think making a political statement can't be stylish? Think again. Check out Barack Obama's store website- there are lots of great finds including a shirt by Beyonce and a tote bag by Marc Jacobs.
Smartie pants: Crushing on that intelligent hottie whose black frames alone scream 'intellect'? Don't stress- they're people too- you just have to be observant. Books and magazine subscriptions are always a safe choice for these smarties. Want something more creative and unique? Take them to a poetry slam or get them coveted tickets to a speech by a world known scholar.
Adventurous type: Ah, you've got to love those thrill seekers- they may seem so hard to please but really all they want is to get their adrenaline going. Get tickets to an extreme sports event or better yet if you have the money to burn take them skydiving or white water rafting! If money is a problem settle for an amusement park- you'll still get the same great adventure! Want something fun and cheap- buy that special someone rollerblades and spend the day blading through the city!

Guy's guy: They're really not that difficult to please. If he's a typical beer drinking, sports loving, girl crazy guy you shouldn't have any problem getting him something perfect. Does he have a bachelor pad? Get him a dart board or one of those three in one game tables- Walmart has a table that converts to foosball, turbo hockey, and billiards and it's only $99! You can never go wrong with a handle of his favorite liquor or case of imported beer.
Girl's girl: Once again, not that difficult to please. Chick flicks and comedies are usually well liked (although it may not be with your girl so be sure to check out what she likes before purchasing) when it comes to movies. We already have enough makeup so stay away from that- especially if you just began dating because she might think you're telling her she needs to wear more makeup (we're emotional, remember?). Jewelry is always a safe bet- even if it's inexpensive it can still become one of their most coveted pieces. Just be observant of their clothes, reading habits, music and movie tastes, and personality- you're bound to get an idea.
Ask a friend: Still not sure what holiday gift to pick up for that special someone? Perhaps you should ask a friend- don't worry, it's not giving up, rather it's using all available resources. Better safe than sorry, right?
