Tap Tap Metallica

While Rock Band and Guitar Hero have been going head-to-head on the consoles, Tapulous's Tap Tap Revenge series has reigned supreme on the iPhone. But with the recent release of Rock Band for the iPhone, Tapulous knew it had to crank it up a notch. And what better way than with Tap Tap Metallica?

If you've played other games in the Tap Tap series, you will recognize the same basic gameplay in Tap Tap Metallica. The beginning level of career mode starts with three vertical lanes where you tap falling balls in time to the music. Once you've scored high enough on the first five songs, you unlock a challenge song that introduces you to the next level.

After you've mastered Easy and Medium, you can check out the Hard setting, which introduces you to four lanes and balls that really fly at you. On the Extreme setting, you turn the iPhone horizontally and begin tapping out songs using five lanes. And, if you are like me, you quickly decide you need more practice on Hard.

Those familiar with Rock Band will notice that the song isn't divided up into separate instruments. You also won't be punished with a break in the song if you make a mistake. But what is really cool is that game neatly combines the guitar parts and the drum parts, so at one point you'll be tapping along to a solo, and the next moment your alternating between the guitar riff and the bass drum.

Tap Tap Metallica - Arcade and Battle Mode

But it is in Arcade mode that the Tap Tap Metallica really cranks it up. Here, you'll need to take special care at collecting those special orange-detailed balls so that you can earn shields.

Why do you need shield? Well, you'll want some protection from the bombs being dropped on you. If you don't shield yourself, you'll have one of many different effects hit the playing field from a bell tolling that blocks out the song to a the balls racing down at you at hyperspeed to even blacking out the entire screen. (The bell tolling as in For Whom The Bell Tolls is an especially cool touch.)

You can also enter Battle mode against a friend via Bluetooth and send bombs flying his way.

The Arcade mode is crazy-fun and definitely the highlight of the game. Try mastering this on Extreme mode, tapping out those near-impossible rhythms while clicking on the shield button in time to protect yourself from a bomb.

Tap Tap Metallica Review Score: 88

This is definitely well worth the $4.99 if you are a Metallica fan. The sound is great coming through headphones, and it doesn't lose much going through the 3GS's speakers. Tapulous also does a good job capturing the 'feel' of the songs, leaving the only real negative as only coming with 10 songs.
