About the only thing missing from Rock Band for the iPhone are the plastic instruments and the ability to sing. But for those who love the vocal parts, don't worry, you can still play the singer. You'll simply be tapping the notes out.
Rock Band for the iPhone is a faithful port of the popular music game, and long-time fans of the series will find the familiar trappings including Quick Play, Multiplayer and World Tour. In Quick Play, you jump right into a song, choosing from Warmup songs like Blondie's Hanging on the Telephone all the way up to the Impossible Cherub Rock by the Smashing Pumpkins. And in Multiplayer, a friend can join you via Bluetooth.
But World Tour is the met of the game. In the Solo Tour, you work your way from playing gigs around Boston, then conquering New York and Seattle before hitting the world stage in Paris and Moscow. Like Rock Band for the consoles, you'll first need to master a few songs before unlocking additional gigs. And you don't have to go it alone. Rock Band uses Facebook Connect to help you team up with friends for an Online World Tour.
You don't create your own rocker in Rock Band for the iPhone, so there's no earning new t-shirts for your collection, but you can choose from Guitar, Bass, Drums or Vocals. The game also has three difficulty settings: East, Medium and Hard.
Of the four, the Guitar seems the smoothest and best transition to the iPhone, while the Drums come off a little awkward. And while you don't actually sing to play vocals, the game does a neat job of transitioning between four pads for singing parts and one pad for the tambourine. It even lines everything up vertically as you would see it on the console version.
As you would expect, the sound quality is very good, even when it is coming through the speaker. And like the console version, if you don't hit the note, you won't hear the sound. So you'll know how good (or bad) you are doing without checking the score. (Of course, if the fret board turns red and you are promptly booted from the stage, that's a pretty good indication too.)
Rock Band for iPhone Review Score: 93
The only thing Rock Band fans might not like is the rather pricey (for the iPhone app store) cost of $9.99. But if you want to take your Rock Band on the road with you, Rock Band for the iPhone is worth the price of admission. Not only does it do a good job of porting the song to the iPhone, you'll also be able to buy additional songs in the future.
