Independence Day can be a fun filled day for families, but it isn't always quite as fun for pets. All of that noise, heat and confusion can be overwhelming for your four legged friend. To be sure your dog enjoys the day, too, consider trying a few safety precautions.:
- Make sure plenty of fresh water is available, especially if you are spending a lot of time outdoors with your dog. Black dogs are especially prone to dehydration and heat exhaustion, but any dog can get hot and thirsty when it plays outside during the summer.
- Set up an area for your dog to rest in. A kennel or pet bed off to the side gives your pet a place to retreat to when it gets overwhelmed by all the activity.
- Be prepared for a reaction to fireworks. Many dogs are terrified of loud noises and will want to be inside with their owners when the fireworks go off. If your dog is especially afraid, consider asking your vet about tranquilizers or a natural pet calming solution.
- Check for ticks after you come inside. Even if you use a tick preventative on your dog, you don't want to allow ticks to stay on it long enough to become attached.
