It's hump Wednesday. The weekend is closer, yes, but you've probably still got a formidable stack of work on your desk. This is the day when stress can get the best of us.

The folks at Prevention are here to help, with a handy guide of 14 little things you can do to instantly lift your spirits.  Some are expected, some a little more surprising.

For example:

Look at photos from happy times, such as a favorite vacation or family reunion. Keep a stack in your drawer, or load some into your computer and rotate in your screen saver.

Take a walk outside. The change of scenery, the fresh air -- and more importantly, the sunshine -- are great mood enhancers. (If you can get away with Fido, all the better!)

Eat a handful of nuts such as walnuts or pecans that are rich in Omega-3 fats -- which are thought to ease symptoms of depression.

Zone out. Take a mental break from your hectic day. Turn away from the computer, put the phone on mute, prop up your legs and close your eyes, even for just a few minutes -- and think about things you're looking forward to.

Do a good deed.  Even something as simple as holding the door for someone or letting their car merge in front of you can help you connect with another human in a positive way, and give you a boost from that positive energy.

LAUGH. Find a funny video on YouTube, recall an amusing anecdote from your life, or chat up a colleague, friend or neighbor with a sunny disposition and witty outlook on life.

Most of all, try to be as optimistic as possible. Studies consistently confirm that glass-half-full people generally tend to be healthier and happier throughout their lives.  There may not be many things you have the power to control -- but your attitude is certainly one of them!
