Pictured here are only a few of the several rows which
contained everything from okra to melons, squash to
peppers, tomatoes to corn.

You love to dig in the dirt and you gain great satisfaction from watching your plants grow from seedlings to full maturity. And oh, the enjoyment you get from eating the fresh produce or arranging cut flowers from your garden.

The gardener who has turned full-time RVer might find it difficult to practice his or her hobby. So, how can the full-timer satisfy that green thumb? If you are lucky, you might find an RV park like Frog City in Duson, LA where some long-term residence where allowed space to plant a few vegetables.

The tenders of this field knew they were going to be in that park through the growing season. They spoke with the managers of the campground and gained permission to use some of the spacious tent area as a garden. They shared the harvest with other residents and campers in the park and happily spent their evenings weeding, tilling--all those things gardeners love to do.

My advice? You never know until you ask!

If you love to garden, can plan your trips and the length of your stays, look for garden friendly RV parks. Then don't hesitate to talk to the campground hosts or managers about cultivating some ground. Most parks at least have flower beds that need tending. You might be surprised how quickly your campground hosts will jump at the chance to have a resident do the tilling, planting, and weeding for them. You will satisfy your need for seeds while performing a great service for your little community.

Now is the time to start thinking about those plants and flowers that do well in the fall. The weather  and soil is warm enough for seeds to germinate quickly or for nursery plants to start off well. Chrysanthemums are always a winner for fall and so are pansies or goldenrod.  In some areas, vegetables such as salad greens do well this time of year as do snow peas, broccoli and carrots.

To know what will grow and produce well in the area where you are camped, ask your campground host or contact a local nursery for advice. The exciting thing about RV gardening is that if you are staying in an  unfamiliar area,  you have the opportunity to learn about and grow plants that you have never grown before.

So roll up your sleeves, find some dirt, and get something growing!
