Growing combines! Combine City

Traveling the back roads is one fun aspect of RV living. Why not add a little adventure to your day?

If you are planning one last get-a-way from the Dallas area to the Rockie Mountains before fall, take a detour between Claude, TX and Amarillo, TX and check out Combine City.

Everyone (well, anyone that has ever traveled I-40 across the country) knows about the Cadillac Ranch east of Amarillo, but fewer folks have seen these old farm machines planted firmly in the soil of the high plains.

This little known attraction formed when Orville Ladehoff planted his first combine in 2002. Today fourteen combines rest permanently with their rear ends in the ground east of Claude. If you are headed up Highway 287 from Dallas, turn left at the Armstrong County Courthouse in Claude, following Trice Street around to FM 1151. Watch for the harvesters on your right about twenty-five miles out of Claude.

Stop, stretch your legs, take a few photos, then head on your way. About three more miles down the road, turn right onto Osage and you'll end up in Amarillo where you can get on I-40 East. The Downtown Exit will put you right back on 287. You'll add only a few minutes to your trip and be able to say, "I've been to Combine City!" You never know what you'll find when traveling the back roads.
