On almost every road in every state, the speed limit is posted. In most construction zones, fines for speeding will be doubled. No state trooper or city cop will believe you if try to get off by claiming ignorance, so the wise traveler watches his speed and keeps it under control.

But, we are all tempted, from time to time, to push the limit. Trying to make your destination before dark? Just tired of being on the road? Listening to NASCAR on the radio and you're a little too enthusiastic? The foot gets heavy on the gas, and if you are not careful, the speed limit is exceeded.

The last thing you want to deal with is a speeding ticket in a city you are just passing through. The expense and inconvenience is not fun. So, you purchase a radar detector. It's not a foolproof tool, but the early warning signals help to keep you aware of law enforcement officers in the area and remind you to monitor your speed.

Before you plug in your fuzz buster, know the laws of the state in which you travel. In Virginia, it is against the law to use a radar detector. It is actually illegal to have one in your tow vehicle or motor home even if you are not using it. Likewise, Washington D.C. and all military bases ban the use of such devices.

California, Minnesota, and New York have laws forbidding objects attached to the windshield by suction cups. If you are going to use your detector here, you will need to attach it to your visor or mount it on some type of friction dash pad. This restriction also applies to your GPS unit.

Use a friction dash pad like this one for mounting your GPS.

Illinois, New York, and New Jersey place weight limits on vehicles that can legally use radar detectors. Most motor homes are over the limits, so before you travel through these states, know the limits and know the weight of your RV.

Here is a list of states that have laws prohibiting the use of laser jammers.

  • California
  • Colorado
  • Illinois
  • Minnesota
  • Nebraska
  • Oklahoma
  • Utah
  • Virginia
  • Washing D.C.

Know and obey each state's laws concerning any gadget that is designed to help you speed beyond the posted limit or you might end up with a ticket anyway.
