If you're considering acupuncture treatment, you may be curious as to what acupuncture treatment is like and how much it costs.

A typical acupuncture visit

As with any professional, you must make an appointment in advance for acupuncture treatment. They may ask you why you are seeking treatment. Be prepared with your physician's diagnosis and any laboratory tests or scans that may be helpful to the acupuncturist.

When you arrive for your visit, you'll meet with the acupuncturist for a lengthy discussion about your health. Be sure to disclose all medical conditions, medications, herbs and any vitamins or supplements you're taking. You may fill out a paper-based health questonarie or the acupuncturist may choose to simply chat with you about your health while taking notes.

You may be asked to disrobe partially a don a gown, but some treatments don't require this. It depends upon the part of the body the acupuncturist needs to treat.

The needles used for acupuncture treatment should be in a sterile, sealed container. The acupuncturist should use a fresh set on each patient. The needles generally do not cause pain. You may feel a stinging sensation or heat after the needle is inserted. Tell the practitioner of any pain or discomfort; he can tell you if it's normal or not.

You may be asked to lie face down, on your back or on your side during the treatment. Treatment times vary.

Whether you need one treatment or many is up to the acupuncturist. Most of the time you will need a series of treatments.

Typical costs

Acupuncture may be covered by your medical insurance plan. It's your responsiblity, not the acupuncturists, to understand and know whether or not treatments are covered. Call your insurance company well before your first visit to find out what they cover. Costs vary for acupuncture treatments. Don't be afraid to ask the cost before making the appointment. Ask the office is they will take payment plans or credit cards; some do, and this makes acupuncture more affordable.
