Here are five simple ways to make Fourth of July parties a little greener:

1. Create a menu based on what is in season and available at local farms and farmers markets (snap peas, salad and cooking greens, grass-fed beef burgers, and strawberries to name a few).

2. Carpool whenever possible.

3. Use reusable picnic ware. (Lehman's makes a nice stainless steel picnic tray.)

4. Offer a compost bin (for non-meat food scraps) and recycling bin, alongside trash bins.

5. Use cloth napkins or napkins made of non-chlorinated, post-consumer recycled paper like Seventh Generation's 100% recyled napkins.

Local sources for eco-friendly picnic products include:

The Did You Know? Store - located in Wakefield and East Greenwich and
Whole Foods Market - two locations in Providence and one in Cranston
