Plan now to "eat locally" this winter
The Southern New England growing season is well under way,
farmers markets are hopping, and
Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) pick-ups have begun, making now the perfect time to start thinking about what you will be eating next winter.
One of the first steps towards creating a sustainable lifestyle is to plan ahead by growing (or purchasing) and preserving food for later use and one of the simplest ways to preserve food is with your freezer.
This weekend when you head to the farmer's market or to
pick your own berries at a local farm, consider buying a little extra to freeze for winter use.
Berries, such as strawberries and blueberries, require no special preparation. Simply rinse the berries and remove stems. Allow to dry in a colander and then lay the berries out in a single layer on a cookie sheet and place in your freezer. Once the berries are frozen you can transfer them into a freezer-grade plastic bag or other container and store in your freezer for several months.
Next January when you are enjoying local blueberries and strawberries in oatmeal, pancakes, desserts and smoothies, you’ll be grateful for your summertime efforts!
