The Star Trek Enterprise ready for duty

Floppy disks are a thing of the past, but do you still happen to have a whole bunch of them floating around? You will be glad to know that there is no need to toss out any of those relics. Instead pay a tribute to another thing of the past (or, the future?): The Starship Enterprise!

The Metal Shutter, and Data Disk

Find an old floppy disk. It doesn’t matter which kind, really just as long as it is the kind with the metal shutter. Take the old 3 1/2" (90 mm) floppy disk and crack it apart, removing the metal shutter and the data disk. Go ahead and tear out the metal disc from the inside of the data disc.

Now, holding the metal shutter like a book, take a pair of scissors or wire cutters and cut the right hand side of the rectangular opening.

NOTE: The metal edges of the shutter and your scissors are probably very sharp. Please take the necessary precautions, we do not want you taking a trip to visit Dr.McCoy…ahh trekkie humor. But seriously be careful.

The edges of the shutter bent up

Bend the larger square pieces until they are flat, and then angle their edges upward. Make little snips halfway through the narrow sides of the shutter to facilitate placement of the metal disk (the saucer section).

Whooosh! Your star ship in action

Place the metal disk on, putting the neck up through the hole closest to the edge of the hub, and inserting the edge of the hole in the disk through the slits you made. Fold the portions of the neck protruding through the hole in the metal disk down and around the hub to secure.

And there you have it, your very own Star Trek Enterprise!
Things to do with your Star Ship Enterprise:
  1.   Command a whole fleet of Star Ship Enterprises (requires you make more)
  2.   Attach some Invisible thread and make your ship “fly”!
  3.   Use your imagination!!!
