What do tap dancers, parrots, music, rap, and fashion have to do with the environment? Prepare to find out for yourself at the 21st Annual ECOFEST in New York City. On Sunday October 4, 2009 Central Park will come alive with fun and festive ways to help spread awareness about environmental issues. ECOFEST is New York’s largest environmental festival, with plans next year to expand globally.
At a press conference held Friday October 2, ECOFEST Producer Nanci Callahan spoke about the many different activities that will play a role in this year’s event. Highlights will include a performance by Pete Seeger, an eco-friendly car/vehicle showcase, animals for adoption presented by NYC Animal Care and Control, an environmental conference, kids activities, and a fashion show.

The fashion show will boast some of the newest innovations in eco-friendly textiles made from contents such as soybeans, dehydrated milk, bamboo, and hemp silk. Models for the show are provided by Direct Model Management, makeup will be done by DEX New York , and hair by Le Salon Chinois. At the press conference, ECO-FASHION SHOW producer Alice An introduced a sneak peak at several of the designs that will be featured on this year’s runway, which includes designs by Adele Wechsler and Dolores Piscotta . Dolores Piscotta’s line of eco-friendly fashions focuses on developing the use of organic yarns which also promote good health. For example, milk fiber yarn and soybean contain 17 amino acids which are beneficial to the skin as they are worn. Her line includes high quality womenswear, as well as a line of matching clothing for women and their dogs. Everything in the fashion show will be available for purchase.
Along with Peter Seeger, also performing on the World Solar Stage will be the NY TAP-IN for clean water, featuring the legendary Mabel Lee and her troupe of tap dancers. The dancers gave a preview of their ECOFEST performance at the press conference on Friday. The press conference also featured the stylings of up-and-coming rapper Precise who wants to spread the word about recycling to the younger generation. To promote rescue and animal shelter adoption, Gloria Waslyn brought her trio of playful parrots, which are NYC's Spokes Avians for the Mayor's Alliance of Animals as well as Rainforest Ambassadors.
