Matt Gilroy is making noise with the Rangers

With less than a week before the start of the 2009-2010 NHL season, a couple of newly minted professional hockey players are sticking around with their big clubs while others are at the top of their game in the AHL.

Reigning Hobey Baker winner Matt Gilroy is doing the Boston University Terriers proud by having an outstanding training camp with the New York Rangers. So good in fact that he was the recipient of the 2009 Lars-Erik Sjoberg Award for best rookie at Rangers training camp. The award has been given out since 1988 and is voted on my the New York media. Gilroy seems to have servived through to the final round of camp cuts and the Rangers roster stands at 23, the NHL maximum.

Colin Wilson, another former BU Terrier is also set on making a name for himself in the NHL. It didn't take long for Wilson to be moved from the rookie camp roster over the the regular training camp roster. In his first preseason game he tallied a goal and 2 assists in a 5-0 win over the Atlanta Thrashers.

Other Terriers...Jason Lawrence and Bryan McGuirk are currently participating in the Providence Bruins AHL training camp.

Brad Thiessen, who left Northeastern after a great junior season with the Huskies, finds himself in a 3-way battle for the starting goaltender position with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Thiessen was assigned to WB/S on September 23 and he's fighting for the top spot against former BU stand-out John Curry and Jordan Parise, a North Dakota alum. Curry, originally thought to be the back-up for Marc-Andre Fluery in the NHL, was assigned to the Baby Pens after Pittsburgh signed veteran netminder Brett Johnson to a 1-year contract. The WB/S Penguins will open their season next Saturday, October 3 against the Syracuse Crunch.

Speaking of the Crunch...Former Boston College assistant captain Tim Filangieri is on the Syracuse Crunch training camp roster. Filingieri signed a one-way contract with the Crunch at the end of last season after appearing in 35 games for the Eagles. The Crunch are the AHL affiliate of the Columbus Blue Jackets.

The Worcester Sharks (AHL) roster also features a couple of familiar faces: Louis Liotti, a stand-out defenseman from Northeastern will be lining up on the blue line for the Sharks...John McCarthy will be skating with old Terrier teammate Tom Morrow in Worcester.
