According to ESPN U and the Boston Herald there will be college hockey at Fenway Park this winter. It has already been confirmed that the Boston Bruins will host the Philadelphia Flyers in the third annual Winter Classic on New Year’s Day, but pending a formal announcement there will also be a college hockey double header a week later on January 8.

According to ESPN’s source the Boston University and Boston College men’s teams will face-off as well as the women’s hockey teams from the University of New Hampshire and Northeastern.

An official announcement is expected to come next week. Check back for more details as they become available.

College hockey fans may remember the last outdoor college hockey game played between rivals Michigan State University and the University of Michigan back in October 2001. The "Cold War" game drew 74,544 to Michican State's Spartan Stadium to watch the two teams play to a 3-3 tie. The game was internationally televised and sparked the outdoor ice hockey game craze which has now become a first day of the new year favorite.
