Wednesday marked the 2009 induction ceremony at the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in Eveleth, Minnesota. The Class of 2009 included Tony Amonte, Tom Barrasso, John LeClair, the 1998 U.S. Olympic Women's Ice Hockey Team and Frank Zamboni.
Northeastern hockey saw two of its own inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame this past week. Ben Smith, former head coach of the Huskies and Shelley Looney, a stand-out on the women’s team from 1990-1994 were both named to the Hall.
Smith was behind the bench for the Northeastern men’s team through the 1995-96 season before leaving to become head coach of the United States National Women’s team. He led the team to three Olympic medals, including gold in 1998.
Looney played for Smith on the U.S. National team and skated in two Olympics. She still ranks as the 10th all-time in scoring at Northeastern and was named to the Northeastern Hall of Fame in 1999.
Tony Amonte played in two seasons at Boston University before leaving for a successful NHL career. While with the Terriers he was responsible for 126 points on 56 goals and 70 assists.
