It is 4pm and hunger strikes. Your energy levels are low and the clock is slowly ticking away. Do you

A. open your desk drawer and reach for some hidden candy

B. head straight to the vending machine and buy some salty chips, cookies or a soda or

C. reach into your bag and take out the healthy snack you brought to work?

Hopefully, you answered C, but if not, here are some healthy snack ideas to energize you throughout the work day:

Craving something crunchy? Try:

  • apples
  • frozen grapes
  • rice cakes
  • crunchy crudités of veggies and dip (hummus, tabouli, vinaigrette, favorite dressing)
  • celery and almond butter
  • hummus or salsa with Mary's Gone Crackers

Craving something sweet? Try:

  • fresh fruit
  • organic raw cacao bar, like Gnosis Chocolate
  • non-dairy rice pudding. Candle Cafe sells a delicious version at Whole Foods locations in Manhattan
  • smoothie- try vega's whole food optimizer
  • sweet vegetables: yams, sweet potatoes, squashes  cut into chunks; sprinkled with cinnamon and bake.

Craving something salty? Try:

  • steamed vegetables with tamari/shoyu or umeboshi vinegar
  • tortilla chips and salsa or guacamole: try whole grain chips such as “Garden of Eatin” brand and freshly made salsa or guacamole.
  • freshly made kale chips
