Did you know that this Sunday is the official start of summer? It hasn’t felt much like summer here in NJ, but here’s to hoping that’s about to change. So, are you planning on throwing a barbeque, attending a poolside party, or hitting the bar scene this weekend to kick off the start of summer? If so, check out these tips on how to stay healthy while sipping those summertime cocktails.

You already know that drinking is not good for your health. Not only does it leave you feeling dehydrated and with a splitting headache the next day, drinking has been linked with cancer, liver disease and an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes. Even more, alcoholic drinks are very caloric and lower inhibitions so you’re more likely to eat fattening foods, which is sure to put in a kink in your weight loss goals. However, you don’t have to give up your summertime drinks all together.

Alternating between alcoholic drinks and non-alcoholic drinks is a great way to make sure you don’t overdo it. Drinking a glass of water in between is a great way to reduce your alcohol intake. Or, try ordering a seltzer with a splash of cranberry juice. No one will even know the difference. Another option is to sip on a drink with less alcohol like a white wine spritzer. The idea is to keep something in your hand at all times so you’re not drawn to order more alcoholic and calorie laden drinks.

Bottoms up!
