Shaping up the workplace: Get your coworkers involved
After a stressful and exhausting 8-hour work day, it’s easy to hit up the local bar with a few coworkers for some happy hour drinks to relax and unwind. But watch out, those drinks go down easily and pack 200-300 calories a punch. So what if instead of the bar, you and your coworkers hit the gym post work? Seem impossible? Not for the employees of Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. Over 500 coworkers turned their weight loss goals into a competition, similar to the popular television show, “The Biggest Loser,” this past spring. The winner received a hefty cash prize and was treated to a luxurious trip to the Short Hills Hilton Spa. Their story is now inspiring many other companies to hold similar competitions, in an effort to improve health awareness in the workplace.
Yet, is it really possible to trade in your after work martinis for dumbbells? Take a stab at it. Try rallying your office together to run a 5K for charity. Not only will you motivate your coworkers to shape up and be healthy, but it’s also for a great cause. Or, try organizing a corporate softball team. You might even win brownie points with your boss for your outstanding display of leadership. If these options don’t seem right for your particular workplace, borrow an idea from Beth Israel and hold a contest. No one can say no to a cash prize or a trip to the spa.
The bottom line is that it is extremely hard to lose weight, make healthy lifestyle changes and achieve lasting weight loss stick by going at it alone. However, when a group of people come together and commit to making healthy choices, change is bound to happen. What better way to do it than with your coworkers, while making an effort to improve the overall health of your office.
