It’s difficult to imagine in these hot August days that autumn is right around the corner, but chin up, the heat and humidity will soon change to cool breezes and rainbow colored leaves. Along with the weather change comes a multitude of opportunities to see artwork created by local artists and craftspeople exhibiting in group show spaces and in their very own studios and workshops: let the Open Studios season begin!
Open Studios is an annual tradition in Boston involving thirteen neighborhoods within the city limits, and more than twenty-five towns in surrounding areas. Each neighborhood promotes one or two Open Studios weekends each year to showcase creative work produced by artists living and working nearby. These weekends provide the rare chance of viewing art in the environment in which it was made, and to have the opportunity to speak directly with the artists about the work they dedicate their life to creating. It’s a very different experience seeing art in this manner as opposed to viewing art in the more sterile environment of a gallery or museum. Viewing art with the artist, in their own space, makes it all the more personal and meaningful and is well worth the trip.

In addition to walking through Boston’s artist-saturated neighborhoods, viewing local art up close, and speaking directly with artists about their work, the other benefit to attending Open Studios events is that you can purchase art directly from the people who create it and choose pieces for your home or workplace having added a deeper connection to your viewing experience.

Two Open Studios weekends in September that are among the largest and most vibrant in the city are The South End Open Studios, September 19 – 20, and the Jamaica Plain Open Studios, September 26 – 27. With these sprawling events, featuring hundreds of artists working in a wide variety of mediums, the local arts season begins in earnest and is sure to be a refreshing breeze after a slow summer.
