Michael Bay’s 'Transformers: The Rise of the Fallen' meets the expected high-adrenaline, explosive action movie of the summer requirements. This time around Bay and company are able to play around a bit more with the action figure characters and expand the Transformers universe on the silver screen. Fans of the series will be pleased or not - as there are some major creative liberties within the story – and newcomers will definitely enjoy the ride. If you’re a fan beware, uncovering the story might come with some mayor spoilers within this review.

At first glance the story seems very straightforward. Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) tries to get back to a “normal” life leaving for college and exploring a relationship with his girlfriend Mikaela (Megan Fox). Screenwriters Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Ehren Kruger craft an interesting and parallel storyline between Sam’s character and that of the Autobots – the idea of leaving home, moving on and making it on your own. Of course, that would be an easy task if it was not for the Decepticons returning for sweet revenge. From then on, the writers introduce different stories from the Transformers’ universe – the comic books, the animated movie and series - in order to craft the high octane punch that fans are expecting this time around. For the most part, they are very successful at it – the only thing that might hurt the story is the long exposure it receives throughout; which is about an hour too long in order to accomplish the mission at hand.

The story starts off with a bang – literately where the Autobots are working with a top secret military group to uncover remaining Decepticons on earth. The team’s surveillance quickly reveals the enemy hiding in Shanghai that turns into one of the most amazing and jaw-dropping battle scenes in the film and setting the tone for the rest of the adventure. For this sequel, Optimus Prime is not only at the center of the story but his character becomes a fundamental supporting part of the film – the writers are illustrating directly from the Transformers animated movie killing him off to setup the dramatic arch in 'Transformers: The Rise of the Fallen'.

But the film does not stop there. Bay introduces a batch of new characters and remarkable battle scenes this time around – with brilliant attention to detail – that will certainly have the audience at the edge of their seats. Fans will be thrill to see Insecticons and Constructicons running amok on the screen – particularly when the latter group merges into the Devastator for the climatic scene. 'Transformers: The Rise of the Fallen' is a visually stunning action-movie, packed with all of Bay’s film style and explosive scene sequences – even though the story draws out a bit longer than necessary. Is it a worthy sequel to the first Transformers film? Does it stay faithful to the Transformers universe and storyline? Well, tickets sales at the box office – fans and other movie goers alike – will reveal whether or not that is the case this week. If not, it certainly makes for a great summer movie which in itself is a hard feat to accomplish.
