There is no doubt that animated films have changed in the last year or so. 3-D has taken over the usual animation rendering to give audiences a different movie going experience. Director Shane Acker follows a conventional path where his vision creates a story that is truly out of this world.
“9” is Acker’s feature- length film from his Student Academy Award winning-short of the same name. The 11-minute short impressed audiences with its striking characters and sci-fi storyline, receiving awards in the film festival circuit – and the coveted Academy Award nomination. The story unfolds in a post-apocalyptic future where machines have taken over and civilization is at the brink of extinction. In order to preserve mankind’s legacy a scientist crafts a group of “stitchpunk” creations – coined by Acker himself- to save the world. Within this tribe, is #9 who leads the other members into a hopeful future exploring their will to live and to change the world.
The film is not only an action-packed adventure but also a visual fantasy that will have audiences at the edge of their seat. Much of the CGI world in “9” is set in post-world war society; the war emblems and the newsreel are present in the film adding to the story’s end of the world theme. There are also references and symbolism to Greek mythology – the most noticeable ones having to do with death in the storyline. Acker’s extraordinary vision and meticulous detail in the film is awe-inspiring – from the ominous machines to the mountainous background – that truly portrays a vivid and creative atmosphere. The magnificent world in “9” makes one wonder: where does fantasy end and reality really begin? And that truly makes for a magnificent animated film and worth of another round of Oscar nominations.
