In James Brown famous words; “What you want? Soul power. What you need? Soul power.” And framing that sense of joy and vibrant world director Jeffrey Levy-Hinte brings a documentary celebrating legendary artists and musicians that participated in an obscure music festival back in 1974 - aplty titled 'Soul Power'.
Dubbed “Zaire ‘74”, the 12-hour and three day long music festival held in Kinshasa was the backdrop to the well-known epic boxing event known as “The Rumble in the Jungle” between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman – documented in the Academy Award-winning film ‘When We Were Kings’. The latter became the inspiration for Levy-Hinte to craft a documentary and expose the brilliant performances from such high caliber acts like; James Brown, BB King, The Spinners, Celia Cruz and many more. All of them uniting to celebrate their African roots and inspirations for their music and soul – showing that ultimately music is a universal language.
The film is composed from extensive “outtakes” and stage performances from the artists – including rehearsals and spur of the moment’s music sessions. The latter highlighting the marvel and creative energy within these artists; many of which were at the pinnacle of their music career. Levy-Hinte and company take a different direction from the usual route and instead of bombarding the audience with back commentary they let the footage speak for itself – that after 34 years finally sees the silver screen and will certainly delight audiences.
'Soul Power' is a magnificent documentary capturing the essence of music, soul and creativity within the “Zaire ‘74” festival. It captures history in time celebrating the most influential acts in music, artist who became legends, and people who connected through one universal language: music.
The film is in limited release in NYC at the Landmark Sunshine and Lincoln Plaza Cinemas.
