Director Franc. Reyes (‘Illegal Tender’, ‘Empire’) brings another urban tale to the screen with ‘The Ministers’. John Leguizamo and Harvey Keitel star in the film set in New York City’s gritty streets where a young detective is obsessed with uncovering her father’s violent homicide.

The story follows Celeste Santana (Florencia Lozano), a street-smart detective who suddenly falls for a cabbie that might unravel the mystery behind her father’s murder. Reyes captures the gritty atmosphere of the city and the characters within – the good, the bad and the ugly – but is not able to stay away from the usual clichés that exist in the crime-thriller genre.

Leguizamo stands out taking on a dual role that truly shows his acting range. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about the rest of the cast. Add to that the slow pacing of a tangled-up story making ‘The Ministers’ a forgettable film in this weekend’s box office.
