   Dr. Beverly Kaye

"May you always love your work." Those are the words Dr. Beverly Kaye inscribed in my copy of Love It Don't Leave It - 26 Ways To Get What You Want at Work. Co-authored with Sharon Jordan-Evans, this book offers practical advice to employees on how to assume responsibility for job satisfaction and career fulfillment.

As I wrote in my previous article on Dr. Kaye, she is the founder and CEO of Career Systems International, where she manages an organization dedicated to retention, engagement and career development. Before earning her doctorate at UCLA, she did graduate work at the MIT Sloan School of Management. She earned her Master's Degree from George Washington University. She is a noted speaker and has consulted for leading corporations including Intuit, Marriot International, Lockheed Martin, ADM, Caterpillar, WellPoint, and GE.

Love It Don't Leave It is for employees who want to take responsibility for their careers. It's about chartings one's path to success by establishing goals, defining personal values, and defining the appropriate actions to achieve satisfaction. The book contains 26 chapters containing proven strategies to take control of one's future. Here is a quick summary of a few of the strategies included in the book:

  • Define your goals - there are many ways to enjoy job growth. Sometimes lateral moves are an option, particularly in today's economy. Dr. Kaye gives advice on how to explore all the possibilities.
  • Have fun at work - learn how to create fun in your work environment and inspire others to participate.
  • Find a mentor - find a sponsor who can help teach you and realize your career goals.
  • Seek opportunities - be action-oriented. Attend seminars, do research on industry trends, and continually improve your job and technical skills.
  • Ask for feedback - find the gift of feedback, and utilize the information to modify your behavior where it makes the most sense.
  • Be passionate about your work - it takes courage to pursue a job that you love.
  • Enjoy rewards beyond money - sometimes our greatest rewards are more than money, and are found not in a paycheck but in acknowledgements, plaques, or other forms of appreciation.

This book is a helpful tool for employees to read, digest, and develop talking points for a meeting with their manager regarding career strategies. Both this and Dr. Kaye's Love 'Em or Lose 'Em - Getting Good People To Stay are excellent companion books to managers who are developing people retention strategies, and methods to improve their overall communication skills with employees.

Dr. Kay's organization offers learning solutions for managers that improve their overall effectiveness for being engaged and focused on their employees.  Her programs and processes build strong leadership skills that motivate and retain a talented workforce.
