People from all over the Bay Area showed up yesterday, September 27th, for Alice Radio 97.3’s first free Now and Zen Fest - so many that they had to close the gates. The concert, held in Golden Gate Park at Sharon Meadow, featured some big names, and was met with high temperatures and plenty of sunlight.
Dashboard Confessional started out the day, with a short set composed mostly of older songs. They started with “Vindicated”, their hit song from the Spiderman soundtrack. They ended the day with “Stolen”, from their Dusk and Summer album. They were followed by Howie Day, who opened his set with a song - “She Says” - from his first album. He played a few songs from his newest album Sound the Alarm, which was just released three weeks ago. His acoustic style was great for the sunny day - his voice was as beautiful as ever. He ended with his best known song, “Collide”, which was featured a few years ago on TV shows such as One Tree Hill, Scrubs and Grey’s Anatomy. Colbie Caillat was up next, to the delight of most of the crowd. As she started her set with a new song, almost every member of the audience was on their feet and dancing. Her personality came through as she conversed openly with the crowd, and she seemed pleased by the turn out. Caillat mentioned having family in attendance as well. She sang her hit songs, “Fallin’ For You” and “Realize”, as well as a cover of the Pussycat Doll’s song “Don’t Cha”. She ended her set with “Bubbly”, her first single.
After Colbie Caillat finished playing, a few people left, but many people waited to watch the main act, Train. They opened with a newer song, then preceded to play “Meet Virginia”, one of their biggest songs. They also included their hits “Calling All Angels” and “Drops of Jupiter”, among others.
The festival featured many other interesting things too. Despite the obvious food, drink and merchandising booths, there was a sunscreen bar, a massage therapist, and a Body Mass Index calculator, sponsored by Kaiser Permanente, as well as an art tent which allowed audience members to decorate a Now and Zen poster and Alice’s ZENsational Green area that was designed to teach attendees about solving environmental issues.
