One constant occurrence of the near death experiences phenomenon is the being of light. According to the NDE survivor’s background or religious belief, the being of light is thought of as God or an angel which encompasses warmth and love. This being takes away any fear which is present at the time of near death and thereby allows the person to anticipate the future occurrences awaiting him.
According to Wikipedia, angels are viewed as messengers of a supreme being which are sent to do the tasks of the divine being. Depictions of angels are those of human form or balls of light.
Origins of Angels
Scriptures teach that angels were created by God prior to God’s creation of Man. They were created to walk among humans as their guides. Some religions teach that each human, at birth, is given an angel to guide him throughout life. They are known as guardian angels.
However, not all angels are good. Some were at odds with God, and in a power struggle, were banished from His presence. Thereafter, those dark angels were labeled demons, with Satan, the most powerful dark angel, as their leader. (Alan Bonifay, from the Origin of Angels, 1997).
Angels and Religious Beliefs
In the book, Where Angels Walk, by Joan Western Anderson, it is stated that Catholic children are taught to pray to their guardian angels and have assigned a celebratory feast day of October 2nd for the angels. She noted that the Talmud assigns eleven thousand guardian angels to each Jewish child at birth. In contrast to Catholicism, most protestant religions forbid praying to angels but only to ask for them to intervene for us.
Angels in Near Death Experiences
During his research with NDE survivors, Dr. Raymond Moody found that most persons, regardless of their religious beliefs, felt the being of light communicate with them, not in the physical sense, but telepathically. The questions posed by the being, by many accounts, were “Are you ready to die” and “What have you done with your life”?
If angels are created to guard us through the process of life, perhaps they are also here to guard us through the process of dying.
