Autumn ride to Blue Lakes, great ride! (photo/Ferris)

The crew at Placerville Bike Shop will be leading a ride in the mountains this Sunday, Oct. 18. The ride starts at 10:30am and is an out and back to Blue Lakes, on the Blue Lakes Road. This is in the Hope Valley area near Lake Tahoe.

This ride is 22 miles total, 11mostly up, and 11mostly down, with no really big climbs involved. Bob from Placerville Bike Shop says that the ride is suitable for any level of rider. The road is good for road bikes or mountain bikes, and is on a generally pretty good road.

How do you get there? If you are coming from the Jackson area, head up Highway 88, go over Carson Pass, past Forestdale Creek Road, and about 4 miles later turn right on Blue Lakes Road. Go into the parking lot on your left just after you turn onto Blue Lakes Road.

If you are coming from the Tahoe area, head to Meyers, take Highway 89 over Luther Pass and head into Hope Valley. When you get to the junction of Highway 89 and Highway 88 (Picketts Junction), turn right onto 88 and a couple of miles up the road you'll see the signs for Blue Lakes Road. Turn left onto Blue Lakes Road, and go into the parking lot on your left.

If you are coming from the Sacramento area, head up Highway 50, over Echo Summit, and drop into Meyers. Take Highway 89 to Hope Valley. When you get to the Highway 89, Highway 88 junction (Pickets Junction), turn right onto 88, head up the road a couple of miles, and turn left onto Blue Lakes Road, then into the parking lot on your left. You could also go through Pollock Pines, taking Sly Park Road to Iron Mt. road, then Iron Mt. road to Hwy 88, turn left and head to the Blue Lakes Road.

As of today the weather report is for clear skies and a high around 55. Bring plenty of sunscreen and some layers so that you will stay comfortable during and after the ride. Remember to bring water and fix-it gear as well. The nearest real gas station once you get there is back in Meyers, so start with a full tank. Cell phone reception out there is mostly non-existent. There will be plenty of experienced riders, and no one will be left to fend for themselves.

Bob says that there will be a post-ride potluck picnic lunch, so if you intend to eat afterward, bring something good to share. The ride will be in a beautiful area, and the colors up there are just beginning to burst out. Bring your camera, and be prepared to have a great ride, with some really great people. Call 530.622.3015 for more information about this ride.
