Chevron oil company lost 3 oil wells and outfit facilities as a result of  explosions  in the oil platforms  in  Delta State of Nigeria during the week.

The self styled militant group MEND (Movement for Emancipation of Niger Delta) have claimed responsibility for the attacks that destructed 2 oils wells, with the trunk - gas lifts at Makaraba and another oil well at Otunana on Friday and Saturday June 12, and 13, 2009 respectively.

Meanwhile, chevron management and experts are yet to determine the cause of the explosions, or validate the militants claims. When asked about the incident, the spokesman for the Nigerian Joint Task Force (against militant groups) in Delta State, Colonel Rabe Abubakar confirmed the explosions at the facilities. He reiterated that the cause is still unknown , but is under investigation.

Recently, Nigeria navy gunboats engaged the militants in a gun fight when the gunmen attempted to hijack a navy boat along Chanomi creek in Delta state. A filipino national was killed in cross fire fighting during one of the encounters near Chevron oil export terminal , with a 125,000-barrels-per-day refinery.
