The exclusive resort town of Puerto Aventuras is the only true sheltered marina in the Riviera Maya region of Mexico. It was also the first major development south of Cancún, though it has not had the rapid growth that has been seen in Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos or Tulum. If you talk to the locals, they’ll tell you that it’s by design in order to retain the small-town feel and exclusive nature of the resort.
Hurricane Emily passed directly over the marina in 2005, sinking boats, beaching others, and wreaking havoc across town, but thousands of palm trees were replanted, and the area quickly regained its prestorm appeal. In fact, encouraged by the way the town survived the hurricane, condo sales have been booming, and the community’s main challenge now is keeping its small-town luster.
Visitors enter through a large security gate just off Highway 307. The road winds down to the beach and ends at the 250-slip marina, which is packed with fishing boats, dive boats, sailboats, and pleasure yachts. The marina channels wind through an open-air pedestrian plaza, which is lined with restaurants, shops, bars, pharmacies, Internet cafés (which are a little expensive at $1 for 10 minutes), and a few grocery/convenience stores.
A Dolphin Discovery location is built into the marina, and visitors can stroll the plaza while watching the dolphins cavort, swim, and even jump out of the water. There are relatively few places to stay, given how pleasantly landscaped and maintained everything is. There is a nine-hole golf course, a museum, a crafts market, tennis courts, and a beautiful beach where the reef is close to shore, keeping the wave action to a minimum.
