The day of the NBA Draft is one of my favorite each year. With only two rounds, the whole thing is over in just over three hours, and unlike the NFL Draft, you are working with a limited pool of players. Hopefully the list of players drafted tonight will include Eagles guard Tyrese Rice, who has finished his workouts and done all he can do for now.

Here are some articles discussing Rice for your draft day reading pleasure:

  • A Dan Duggan article in the Boston Herald includes a quote from an anonymous executive who says, "Most guys see him as an undersized combo (guard) that would have real nightmare potential as an NBA defender,” the executive said. “I think offensively he’s a guy that had a lot of freedom at Boston College and he had some spectacular nights . . . but at the end of the day he’s an undersized combo guard without any defensive ability at all at the NBA level.” I would agree with most of this, although I would say Rice has some defensive ability, even if he will never be a stopper off the bench.
  • NESN's Jessica Isner, in her feature of Rice, writes, "BC doesn’t have a great track record of developing future NBA stars." The article is worth reading as a good summary of Rice's career, but the point remains that no one is looking for a star in the second round (and if they are, they are foolishly mistaken), but Boston College does have a mixed track record of even producing rotation players. Craig Smith and Jared Dudley have played well at times and contributed, but Sean Williams and Troy Bell are the counterexamples.
  • NBAdraft.net's latest mock draft has Rice going 54th to the Charlotte Bobcats. Right now the Bobcats already have two point guards in Raymond Felton and D.J. Augustin, so this isn't the best fit, but I doubt both stay there long-term and playing for Larry Brown would be great experience for Rice.
  • The Richmond Times-Dispatch does a piece on local players with a chance to be drafted, with this to say about Rice: "Since the end of the college season, Rice has toured the country, trying to prove his worth to NBA squads during the workouts they hold for potential draft picks. Rice worked out for Indiana, Utah, Milwaukee, Sacramento, Miami, Toronto, Oklahoma City, Chicago, Washington, Cleveland and Denver. As he attempted to make a positive enough impression to get drafted, he knew he couldn't change one thing no matter how hard to tried." (That one thing being his size).
