Last week I went 4-1 in my ACC picks, since I mistakenly didn't believe in the resurgent Virginia Cavaliers. Three weeks ago Al Groh seemed one step away from getting fired, only to beat UNC, Indiana and Maryland in three straight weeks. It has been quite a turnaround for the former New York Jets head coach. This week Groh stays at home in Charlottesville to face Georgia Tech, high off a win last week against Virginia Tech.
The other big conference game of the week takes place in Miami, where Clemson tries to go on the road and give Miami their second ACC loss of the season, which would put them behind Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech in the race for the ACC Championship Game.
And now, onto the predictions:
Mildly Intriguing:
Duke 20, Maryland 14: Duke isn't great, but they're better than the ACC laughingstock they have been in recent memory. I think they pull this one out at home and get their second conference win against a sputtering Terrapin side.
Navy 24, Wake Forest 20: Navy always puts up a good fight at home, and I think that will be the difference against a Wake Forest team that has struggled on the road this season.
North Carolina 27, Florida State 20: I do not trust either of these teams whatsoever. Neither has one an ACC game yet this year despite coming into the season with high expectations. That leads me to go with the home team, and I think UNC's defense will show why they had such high hopes coming into the year.
Georgia Tech 34, Virginia 24: Virginia seems like a popular selection given how they've been playing lately. This seems like a classic letdown game for the Yellow Jackets, but I don't think Paul Johnson will let his team back down with important ACC implications on the line. Georgia Tech will win this one and will leave the ACC Coastal Division with four one-loss teams.
The Appetizer:
Miami 31, Clemson 14: If this game were at Clemson, it would be my game of the week. The Tigers have been fantastic at Death Valley this season, but thoroughly underwhelming on the road. The road jitters strike again this week.
The Main Course:
Notre Dame 31, Boston College 21: This is Notre Dame's last chance to beat BC before they end the series (I guess the losing is getting to them). This team is their best equipped to beat the Eagles in quite a few years, and I think they have the offensive weapons to do just that. Boston College has not shown anything on the road yet this season, and South Bend isn't the place teams get over their road jitters. Add in Notre Dame's loss to USC last week and the Irish will be motivated. Look for Jimmy Clausen to let the pigskin fly and lead Charlie Weis' squad to victory.
