Growing cannas
Growing canna lilies (Photos by Jane Gates)

The canna lily is a plant that grows from creeping thickened roots called rhizomes.  It sends up thick stems from 3' - 9' tall of big, bold leaves and topped by showy flowers usually in whites, reds, pinks or oranges.  Many varieties sport colored foliage in varied greens, deep reds and stripes or patterns of assorted colors.

Canna lilies are highly decorative and with their big leaves can be used to create a tropical or lush feel to a garden even in areas that are quite arid.

Easy to grow, give them sun or partial shade, good to average soil, and anything from bog-like conditions to drought tolerant watering.
