Bird houses attract colorful wildlife to the outdoor yard. In the spring they offer homes for birds to raise families, and in the colder weather they can provide shelter. There are all different styles and shapes for birdhouses. If you want to attract a particular species of bird to your garden, you need to study up on what kind of house that bird will use. Not all birds like the same layout.

There are many interesting and even decorative birdhouses you can use in the garden. You can even build your own birdhouse. Some birds will be attracted to simple, natural-looking constructions while other birdhouses can be created to be sculptural works of art that will decorate the garden and still house little flying friends.

The time and effort you put into building a birdhouse is up to you. Research your favorite local species to see the type of housing your favorite bird will find attractive. Building a birdhouse is a fun project to do at any time of year, even during winter when other backyard activities may be less attractive.

You can find free plans to follow to construct your own birdhouse. Look for plans on the internet on such sites as Craftybirds.com, BirdhouseBuzz.com and Familyfun.go.com among others. Building birdhouses can be a great project for the whole family.

All you need are the basics to build your structure and then you can decorate it however you want. So long as your decorations do not impede the natural domestic attractions of your structure, feel free to make it into a focal point to watch in winter and spring.  Or blend it into the garden as a decorative effect.

Using free plans, it won’t cost much to build your own birdhouse. When it is done, set your birdhouse where your preferred species of bird can use it and both human and bird can enjoy the results.
