The perfect 50's Inspired Retro One-Piece!

Summertime is here and that dreaded task of finding a swimsuit has arrived. I know, since living in Michigan, that after a winter of being stuck inside you barely want to be caught dead in shorts and a tank top (without losing 10lbs that is) let alone a swimsuit. But, there are some wonderful styles out there that flatter every body type and will make that transition into summer even easier. You don’t have to lose weight to feel comfortable in a swimsuit.

Retro-Style- This season there are so many options when it comes to a 1-piece. One of those options is a strapless 50’s inspired suit. These suits are ruched in the front, which will hide that problem area in the stomach. They typically come with a removable strap so if you’re chestier you can attach the strap for more support. The key to picking out the perfect 50’s style suit is picking a solid color and making sure it’s lined. This suit really is flattering to all body types, so if you’re not sure what kind to buy go with this standby. Think America Ferrera.

Tankini-The great thing about tankini’s are that they cover like a one piece with the comfort of a 2 piece! If you are heavier on top, it’s important to choose a tankini that covers your entire stomach. If you are heavier on the bottom you can choose a shorter tankini top and go with a skirt on the bottom. There are so many choices when choosing these suits, it’s really important to try on as many as possible until you find the perfect mix and match style. Choose this suit if you’re curvier all around and pick a style that covers your problem areas (i.e. a skirt if you’re hippier or a square neck-line if you’re bustier). Think Cameron Manheim.

Halter-Top Maillot-This is a 1 piece swimsuit with a halter strap, plunging neckline, and high hip cut. These suits are best is you’re curvier all around. The key to picking the correct maillot is to make sure you’re not going to low on the bust line or too high on the hip line. These suits can be incredibly empowering and make you feel extremely sexy. Choose this suit if you’re confident with your curves and like to feel beautiful. Think Kim Kardashian.

High-Wasted 2-Piece-This suit is great if you have a small bust line but are larger through the hips. It goes back to the retro-style that’s really popular this summer. These can be incredibly flattering if you find the right style. Choose this suit if you want a 2-piece but not a string bikini. Think Kim Cattrall or Scarlett Johansson.

Low-Slung Miniskirt-This is a modern version of boy-shorts. This is a great suit for the pear-shaped woman. Small on top, larger on bottom- you can basically choose whichever top you prefer and the skirt covers any problem areas you may have on bottom. Think Beyonce Knowles.

If you have the body to pull off a string bikini or typical 2-piece then by all means work it, but if you don’t have the body to wear those suits, the ones I mentioned above are great alternatives to a boring solid-color 1-piece. Remember, don’t let swimsuit shopping bring you down, embrace your body the way it is and be proud of your curves.
