Emmy red carpet Ginnifer Goodwyn
Ginnifer Goodwin in Ivanka Trump jewels and Yves Saint Laurent gown.

The beauty award of the night - perfect hair, perfect face, perfect jewels - goes to Ginnifer Goodwin (Big Love). She was immaculate in a minimal look ordained with Ivanka Trump jewels. The pixie cut, clean jewels, and natural finish allowed her warm eyes to pierce through the cameras and for her natural beauty to shine. Ginnifer grows more beautiful each year while her fashion sense gets edgier.
The Big Love star wore a fuchsia Yves St. Laurent gown and Jimmy Choo clutch.

Emmy red carpet Cobie Smulders

Cobie Smulders (How I Met Your Mother) wore perfect hair. This coif has been seen on the red carpet since the beginning of red carpets and has evolved but has anyone ever worn it as perfect as Cobie? It was delicate with just enough carelessness.

Lindsay Price, Carrie Preston and Sigourney Weaver

The red carpet sung with classic forms last night. The one shoulder style was a favored neckline on so many starlets, it became a bit hum-drum as the evening progressed. It was predicted this style would become insanely popular after Michelle Obama wore the style designed by Jason Wu to the Inaugural Balls early this year but by the middle of the night, the trend had gotten to be a bit of a snore. Lindsay Price (Eastwick) wore the trend by J. Mendel in plum and black but she was still lovely. Carrie Preston (True Blood) did the trend in red and black and spruced it up with a black waiste belt as did Sigourney Weaver sans the black and the belt.

Debra Messing, Jennifer Morrison, angela kinsey, anna torv and hayden panettiere

Add crimson to that style and we have just discussed half the leading ladies on the red carpet at the Emmy Awards Show. They were beautiful but safe. Some of the crimson tide troupe included: Debra Messing, Cobie Smulders (How I Met Your Mother), Jennifer Morrison (House), Angela Kinsey (The Office), Anna Torv (Fringe), Hayden Panettiere (Heroes), and Blake Lively (Gossip Girls). All of which were pretty but boring as they appeared one after the other along the red carpet with the exception of Blake Lively and her plunging neckline.

Kristin Chenoweth and Julie Benz
L to R: Jessica Lowndes and Mila Kunis

There is always a small group of celebs that arrive in the most awkward-length gown one can ever wear - tea length. The kinda gown, kinda not length often lands celebs onto the worst dressed lists. Add tulle to this dress and it is hard to keep the ensemble from becoming a disaster.

Mila Kunis was one such victim - not "disastrous" though - in a bordeaux ombre illusion dress by Monique Lhuillier and a diamond bow bracelet by Fred Leighton. The length causes one to seem as though they are in their mother's gown.

It is hard to do short on such shows and get away with it because people are expecting to see glamour. If they wanted to see knees and legs, they can skip the awards show and just tune into the series. The one celeb that pulled off short last night was not Emmy winner Kristin Chenoweth (Pushing Daisies) but Julie Benz (Dexter). Her gown was short but also loose adding to the elegance. Short and tight on the red carpet spells floozy; add crystals and such and it spells Nashville floozy.

Emmy red carpet Christina Applegate

Finishing up a top 10 best dressed ladies of the red carpet is Lindsay Price (pictured above) and Christina Applegate (Samantha Who?).

Christina was so chic in a gown by Lebanese designer Basil Soda, Devi Kroell clutch, and both Coomi and Lorraine Schwartz jewels. This was her best red carpet look to date.

Emmy red carpet Kara DioGuardi

Kara DioGuardi (American Idol judge) was tres chic in this white gown featuring a jewel encrusted V-neck, diamond bracelet and earrings, and black nails.

Emmy Red Carpet Karina Smirnoff
Karina Smirnoff

Dancing With the Stars star Karina Smirnoff was edgy chic in this black one shoulder gown. She resisted the obvious urge to accessorize with a silver or crystal encrusted clutch and went with a black clutch instead. It drove her edgy look home. The rosette detailing along the neck and belt on the gown catapulted Karina beyond glamour to keen and modern fashion.

Emmy red carpet Kyra Sedgwick
Kyra Sedgwick

And lastly, Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer) completes the list in a blush gown by L'Wren Scott. Kyra is a bombshell in whatever she  wears. ...And add killer pumps with a pink heel? Perfection.

The best dressed cast ensemble award goes to Entourage. The men were sleek, the women were chic in metallic gowns and plunging necklines. Bravo!
