On Wednesday night, The September Issue - the R.J. Cutler documentary on how the September issue of Vogue comes together - premiered at the Museum of Modern Art and everyone in New York fashion turned out including the designer king and queen, Oscar de la Renta and Carolina Herrera, and everyone who has ever been nominated for a CFDA award. Okay, perhaps not everyone.
Anna Wintour entered the red carpet with actress Sienna Miller, the subject of the September Vogue cover in 2007, the year in which the movie was in production.
While The September Issue is a close study of the true Anna Wintour for all to compare to on screen character, Miranda Priestly, the consensus is Grace Coddington is the one to watch. Grace Coddington is Anna Wintour's red haired number two at Vogue and their relationship dates back as far as ... well, dates back. The New York Observer quoted Grace as stating this concerning her personification on screen:
"I hate to say it, but true to life! A very annoying person. But it’s not really bickering. It’s a process you have to go through for the job we do and it just makes everything stronger. Whatever gets through is then very valid and very strong. I think they focused on me in the movie because I’m a bit more outspoken and because I don’t care about the cameras, I’ll say whatever I want to say and I won’t hold back."
While we compare Anna Wintour to Meryl Streep's performance, one comparison that was strikingly similar in task was the Vogue staffer's obvious requirement to appear at the premiere in Fashion's Night Out t-shirts. Fashion's Night Out is Wintour's pro shopping project that will be celebrated all over the city on September 10th during New York Fashion Week with pop up performances and give aways near participating boutiques. Vogue staffers are quickly identifiable in the white t-shirts with black graphics - some thrilled, some seemingly not too thrilled.
In addition to Vogue staffers, the prominent designers of NYC were also in attendance including Donna Karan, ex-Voguer Vera Wang, and Marc Jacobs (with fiance Lorenzo Martone on arm). Sean Combs was seen making a mad dash across the MoMA lobby to the viewing for which everyone was on time...a la Anna Wintour.
The September Issue opens in NYC on August 28th and nationwide September 11th. See the slideshow for more coverage.
