2009: A New York-fashionable you
The new year always brings with it new initiatives, resolutions and intent. This year, work on a fashionable you, a New York you. Fashion does not always seem to carry the weight other subject areas carry such as, finances or health, but it does not make it any less important. We are a society that judges a book by its cover so why not put your best foot forward.
Here are a few changes you may add to your resolve and help feel your very best. You have a lot to accomplish this year, endeavor to feel great in your mission.
- Wear platform pumps at least 2 days out of the week with the exception of the coldest month of the year, February. You can wear your riding boots everyday in February - it is a short month. Other than this exception, wear sneakers sparingly during the week. The gym or running are good occassions to lace it up. 'Chucks' or designer trainers like Nike's with the metallic detailing are acceptable a la Uptown/East Village but do not over indulge.
- Tune in weekly, after checking out the New York Fashion Examiner, to The Moment section of New York Times and Fashion Week Daily. Keep your finger on the pulse of what is current in fashion and look for inspiration in designing a new you in 2009.
- Shop Independent designers. There is no better way to develop a fresh and original wardrobe that is completely New York than picking up Indie designs of which not many will own. All in your path will stop to ask where you purchased your attire. And, if you are one of those fashion superstars who will not tell, not to worry - since it is Indie, only a few pieces are available. You will not have to worry about any "Who Wore it Better" occurrences. A few boutiques to visit: Funk NYC, 181 Orchard St., NYC; Saja 252 Elizabeth St., NYC; Thistle & Clover, 221 DeKalb Ave, Brooklyn; and for the finest fashion accessories visit Raffaele e Paola, 270 W 19th St., NYC.
- Attend at least one opening a month. There are so many openings in NYC from galleries, to boutiques, to restaurants. Get your name on a few mailing lists. Start with Milk Gallery or Splashlight Studios. Give them a call and ask to be put on the mailing list for events. This month attend, photographer and Next Top Model judge, Nigel Barker's photo documentary - Haiti: Hunger & Hope from January 9th - 13th at the Milk Gallery, 450 15th Street at 10th Ave, 10AM - 6PM. Mingling with the New York fashion and art set is always a spirit booster.
- Adopt the French eating style. In France, the most important meal of the day is lunch opposed to the American emphasis put on dinner. Have your dinner meal for lunch and enjoy a lighter dinner. And for true Francophile style, eliminate the meat component in your dinner and replace the soda with a glass of wine instead. Throw dinners for your closest friends with cheeses, veggies, crepes and wine. You have been reading Real Simple for years now, put some of what you have flagged and learned to use.
2009 is going to be a great year, start by keeping that head high and finding your most sassiest self. Happy New Year!
