Jewel tone dresses
Counter clockwise: Club Monaco sheath,
Bloomingdale's design, Nicole Miller
charmeuse strapless dress, and Banana
Republic frock.

Black is not for everyone and we all know girls in bright colors have more fun. Jewel tone frocks give a more formal and festive tone to your ensemble. The fuschia sheath pictured is a Club Monaco dress alongside a green frock at Bloomingdale's. Pictured below is Nicole Miller's stretch charmeuse green strapless dress at Nordstrom ($109). On the bottom right is a purple Banana Republic puffy sleeve shift ($78). All are perfect for semi formal events.

For supremely sweet dresses, turn to Anthropologie or Betsey Johnson boutiques. Both are good for carrying the girliest finds. The Anthropologie Icebreaker dress is my favorite.

Zac Posen design

Netaporter.com

Zac Posen is the designer of choice for singer, Rihanna. The dress pictured is on sale at Netaporter.com for $1650 from $2200. Naturally, this is for those lucky few who remain unaffected by today's economy.

H&M designs
H&M dress and jacket

More black at H&M with the princess dress and the long sleeveless jacket that is perfect for pairing with leggings. I would wear a racer back tank underneath the jacket to keep the focus on the jacket.

Yigal Azrouel runway look
Yigal Azrouel Fall 2008

If you are looking for a formal gown ... yes, Yigal Azrouel is a favorite. How understated and chic is this dress pictured from the runway? (Click here for Yigal Azrouel locations.)

Reiss designs
Reiss designs

Turn to the Reiss boutique if you are that confident gal that knows everyone at the fetê. You are bubbly and charming; you need a no-fuss piece. Jumpers were huge this past summer and they are still big this season. Add a pop of color to an all black look as pictured. Texture on the arms of the black frock pictured (right) makes this flirty number the perfect dress in which to work a room.

Lastly, the hottest accessory of the moment is the ribbon necklace. The necklace pictured is at the Gap ($29.50). Pick up a ribbon necklace to add personality to a streamlined top or minimalist look.

If your bank account has not been recession proofed yet, slip on leggings to update any frock or skirt in your closet. Add platform pumps or spectator heels, and voila! You are ready to exercise that flirty charm you possess oh-so-coolly at the party.

Have a drink for me - St. Germain and club soda with a cherry or lime.
