Each year produces its own Balmains, Rodartes and Jonathan Saunders. The seasons, filled with dozens of new hot designers, go by so fast that if you turn away for a second, you might miss the designer whose label you will need to diversify your closet (or wish you could).
Amongst hundreds of designers showing across the world - New York, Paris, London, Sydney, Lakme, and so on - many designers get lost in the shuffle. Below are the top 10 budding designers of 2008 - some you have heard of, some you have not ... until now:
(View the slideshow at the end of this article.)
10. Josh Goot - The Australian designer moved his show to London and it paid off. His move put him on the fashion circuit's radar with easy pieces for day. The downtown set will welcome Goot with open arms.
9. Requiem - Parisian designers, Raffaele Borriello and Julien Desselle, may not have received the reviews for which a young label strives but their spring 09 collection delivered original concepts we will definitely see again.
8. Jason Wu - Crisp and ladylike, Wu's line was all ice cream, luxury and tradition. Wu is definitely on his way to becoming a classic American womenswear designer.
7. Daughters - If you summer at the Cape, Martinique, or right here in New York, snag a few items from this husband and wife team, Swaim and Christina Hutson.
6. William Rast Countrywear has a new sheriff in town and they are adding a bit of city and rock to the mix. Trace Ayala & Justin Timberlake gave an impressive debut collection and is one to watch.
5. Devi Kroell - The accessory designer is now trying her hand at ready to wear and the results, well, let's just say that New York gals will be lusting after yet another designer label.
4. Rag & Bone - David Neville & Marcus Wainwright continue to design a rock/mod collection for the cool British and American set. Their jeans and blazers were the most coveted pieces having made their way on all the 'must-have' lists of 2008.
3. Alexander Wang - There has been such a ruckus about this downtown designer. He may not have won the CFDA Swarovski designer award but his name is on the lips of every NY gal and he has secured his market. He has won already.
2. Graeme Black - The collection was in one word - dreamy. The former Ferragamo designer delivered a clean collection reminding us that women still want to wear pretty clothes in which to behave like a lady. The collection can easily reside in Ivanka Trump's closet.
1. Francesco Scognamiglio - The collection was an abundance of avant-garde designs mixed with a bit of the pristine. Omit the boob baring pieces and Scognamiglio is on his way to becoming a household name ... on Park Avenue, that is.
