New York moms are equally the most unique and the most practical stylist for their children across the country. In one word to describe them - zany. Severely casual dress is the general preference unless the parents' names are Katie and Tom. Suri Cruise can usually be found in a pretty dress and her ruby slippers. She is a complete doll and probably the best dressed child of the year.

New York moms are fans of layering and easy pieces for their kids School at recess in the West Village and just above Houston suggested that the garden clogs were summer's big seller. You could find these rubber shoes in every color on the foot of many NY kids including Matilda Ledger and Uma Thurman's son (pictured).

On the other hand are the NY mom's who continue to prefer European styles for their tots. These little shops catering to these moms are sprinkled all over the city. A particular favorite, which you will not find, is label Papo d'Anjo. You'll need to visit Papodanjo.com to learn where a trunks show will be occurring in your area in order to snag these hidden treasures.
More trends this year
I do not believe there was a better team pairing than colors, pink and brown. Pink and brown seems to be here to stay. Countless little girls were fashioned in the color duo. Moms could not get enough of pink and brown, the winning color combo is also the theme of many princess bedrooms. It is a refreshing color combo after decades of pink, yellow, or pastel green.

In hairstyles, the mohawk was a particular favorite for boys, but not as popular as the fussy long hair to add to the overly casual look among NY boys. Tsk, tsk, Kelly Ripa and SJP who themselves are often smartly dressed. Their boys? Not so much. Victoria Beckham not only ensures that she is impeccably dressed but that her boys are too - the two should go hand in hand.

And what is up with all the parents riding with their kids in all sorts of contraptions attached to their bikes this year? Well call them 'Green Parents', the biggest thing to hit parenting in NY this year. Green cooking, green clothes, green activities - moms and dads have become environmentally conscious. Let us all applaud the trend; it is a formidable habit for the next generation to pick up.
Another favorite among parents is the Cosby-owned boutique in Tribeca where you can find adorable and affordable (and the not so affordable) clothes for children. Oh, and that is Evin Cosby not father, Bill Cosby. The shop, Peanut Butter and Caviar (cute!), is located at 88 Thomas Street b/w Hudson and W Broadway. Also visit PBCaviar.com.

Lastly, quite fashionable is the very New York children's book, Natalie & Naughtily. It is a favorite among metropolitan moms. A fantastic little book written and illustrated by Brooklyn resident, Vincent X. Kirsch. The book is about a set of twins, for whom the book is named, who attempt to help the salespeople at Bergdorf Goodman on a very busy day. They get into a lot of trouble within the deliciously colored and heavily illustrated pages. You can add this book to your English Roses collection.
Also, a tip for you NY moms and dads - Head to the Tribeca Grand Hotel this Sunday for their last Sunday brunch and a movie special. Full buffet ($35 for adults, $13 for kids) and then watch a movie (included) in their plush screening room. Not sure what they are showing this Sunday? Miracle on 34th Street or The Lion King? Lots of fun!
