It is just as difficult to shop for women as it is to shop for men during the holidays. Men and women alike want to accomplish that special moment when your gift is revealed and that look of surprise and glee overcomes your partner's face. It is golden.
Well, I might not be able to pin point the exact gift that will bring the women in your life joy, but I can help you eliminate some gift ideas running through your head that will NOT work. If she is a New York woman, here are a few things she does not want to receive for the holidays:
1. An appliance. Hmmmm, what were you thinking last year?
2. Tickets to your favorite sporting event.
3. Something that she has been complaining she needs. If she has not purchased it thus far, then she has spent the year finding items on which she would rather spend her good money - a telling tale. It does not mean she does not need it; just that she should not receive it for Christmas. Buy it for her as a 'Happy January' gift or because it is Monday - Monday always gets a bad rap.
4. Perfume. Matthew Modine once said to me that a woman's specific fragrance should be a secret from the man in her life. I agree. Did she drop you a hint as to which fragrance she favors? Did she ask for a fragrance? Is it her favorite rare bottle? Then, no.
5. CD or DVD. Is this a stocking stuffer? Is it the Sex and The City: the Movie DVD and only a clever prelude to the amazing closet you built for her? Then, no.
6. A handbag by a B-list designer. It is the thought that counts, right? Sure, but put thought into something she will actually love. Which are the B-list designers? If it ain't Italian or American with the initials M.J.; kindly pass on this.
7. Cheap jewelry. I do apologize, but please do not even bother. What's cheap? Casually strike up a conversation with her and find out what is considered 'cheap' to her. The range can vary from woman to woman.
8. Make-up. This gift says you could not think of anything else and you only made it to the department store to buy her something on Christmas eve ... an hour before the store closed.
9. A book. You thought 6 weeks about this?
10. A dowdy piece of clothing.
Note: #4 also includes Victoria's Secret lotions, sprays, and Bath & Body Works' ... anything.
