When I was younger I used to dream about winning a Pulitzer Prize. The chances of that actually happening are unlikely, but I don't really mind. There are far more deserving writers out there. The 2009 Pulitzer Prize winners and finalists for Arts, Music, and Journalism were announced earlier today. And of course I haven't read any of them yet. Here they are:
Fiction: "Olive Kitteridge" by Elizabeth Strout.
Drama: "Ruined" by Lynn Nottage.
History: "The Hemingses of Monticello: An American Family" by Annette Gordon-Reed.
Biography: "American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House" by Jon Meacham.
Poetry: "The Shadow of Sirius" by W. S. Merwin.
General Nonfiction: "Slavery by Another Name: The Re-Enslavement of Black Americans from the Civil War to World War II" by Douglas A. Blackmon.
I don't really think any of the winners are surprising. Hemingses of Monticello won the 2008 National Book Award. I'm sure that by tomorrow the wait lists for these titles will be fairly long and their rankings on Amazon have gone up. You might want to whip out your library card and request them soon.

Sound off: Have you read any of these? Do you agree with the list? Who was snubbed?
