James Franco has found success in his roles in Freaks in Geeks, Pineapple Express, and most recently in Milk in which he won an Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Actor. He also received a Hasty Pudding Award by the Hasty Pudding Theatricals at Harvard for Man of the Year.
It looks like Franco has found a little more success. Franco has sold a collection of short stories to the Scribner imprint of Simon & Schuster according to his agent Richard Abate. It looks like he'll be joining the celebrity author club.
This is good news for Franco, who’s enrolled in the graduate creative writing department at New York University and is also taking writing classes at Columbia. Even though he is only 30 he is apparently taking his writing career very seriously and has reportedly even turned down acting work to continue with his literary education.
It’s unknown how much Scribner’s paid, or when the book will actually be published. Franco still has this semester and at least all of next year to go in the writing programs. Despite the recent downturn in book sales and cutbacks at publishing houses due to the recession, Scribner seems pretty confident that Franco will sell books. Besides, Scribner is a notable imprint and they wouldn’t have taken the stories if they didn’t think they were good.
Franco is no stranger to the written word, after all he has also written three screenplays: Good Time Max, Fool's Gold, and Ape. Publishing also runs in the family. Franco’s mom Betsy Franco is a well known bestselling children’s book author.
Franco is also keeping his acting life literary, too. He’s just signed to play late beat poet Allen Ginsberg in Howl, a film about Ginsberg’s obscenity trial for the poem of the same name.
I guess we'll have to wait and see what Franco produces. I hope the book comes out sooner than later as I am on a short story kick and I love Franco. I find him hilarious. I just hope he keeps humor in short stories.
