The Academy Awards will be presented Sunday night in Hollywood, California.  Movies based on novels scored some serious nominations last month with The Curious Case of Benjamin Button leading the pack with 13 nominations iincluding Best Actor (Brad Pitt), Best Picture, Best Director (David Finch), and Best Supporting Actress (Taraji P. Henson).  The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is adapted from the F. Scott Fitzgerald short story of the same name.  I'll admit when I saw the film I was skeptical about how a short story would translate into a nearly three hour movie.  The result was a smooth, yet often slow, translation.

Slumdog Millionaire which is loosely based on the novel Q&A by Vikas Swarup received the second most Oscar nominations.  Slumdog Millionaire received 10 nominations including Best Director (Danny Boyle), Best Picture, and two for Best Original Songs.  I saw the film last weekend was blown away.  I think it will walk away with at least five Oscar statues on Sunday.  I think the film was shafted by not receiving supporting actor and actress nods.

The Reader, which is based on the 1995 book by German author Bernhard Schlink about love, sex, reading, and shame in post World War II Germany earned a few nominations as well.  Kate Winslet received one nomination for Best Actress in The Reader (for which she won a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress).  It also received a nomination of Best Screenplay Adaption.  The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and, Slumdog Millionaire also received nominations for Best Screenplay Adaptation.

Revolutionary Road, based on the novel by Richard Yates, earned a couple of nominations as well, including Best Supporting Actor (Michael Shannon).  I haven't seen the film yet, but I am in the middle of Yates book.  I have to say it is pretty intense.  I hope to finish it before Sunday night.

If you are ambitious, you have a couple of days to power through a couple of these novels, or at the very least read the short story by Fitzgerald.

Sound off:  What have you read or seen?  Who should win?
