The 2009 Michael L. Prinz Award  winner and the honor books were announced this morning at the Youth Media Awards in Denver during the American Library Association (ALA) Conference in Denver.  This is an award for a book that exemplifies literary excellence in young adult literature. It is named for a Topeka, Kansas school librarian who was a long-time active member of the Young Adult Library Services Association.  The award is sponsored by Booklist, a publication of the ALA.  Previous winners include American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang (2007), Looking for Alaska by John Green (2006), and How I Live Now by Meg Rosoff (2005).

 2009 Printz Award Winner:

Jellicoe Road by Marlene Marchetta

2009 Honor Books:

The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks by E. Lockhart

The Astonishing Life of Octavian Nothing, Traitor to the Nation Volume II:  The Kingdom on the Waves by M.T. Anderson

Nation by Terry Prachett

Tender Morsels by Margo Lanagan

The medal will be presented at an awards ceremony in Chicago in July at the annual ALA conference.

I have to say, I'm glad The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks was an honor book.  I almost called it.
