Find out more about Danielle: Danielle Dreger-Babbitt has spent the last 13 years working in bookstores and libraries. She once got grounded for reading in elementary school (it was way past her bedtime). In 2007 she read nearly 200 books, but don't ask her what her favorite one was. Asking a librarian to pick her favorite book is like asking a mother to choose her favorite child. When Danielle isn't reading, she's beating her husband at Scrabble. She can be reached here. |

Today is the last day of 2008. The year has been pretty great as far as my reading list goes. I've given you the 10 best books, the 10 worst books, and my 5 guilty pleasure reads of 2008. It hasn't been so hot for publishers, authors, or book sales.
If you're like me, you spend a good part of the day reflecting on the last year and vowing to change in 2009. You might have even started on your list of New Year's resolutions. Mine are always the same (read more books, get in shape, etc.) and I only ever stick to the reading resolution. It's far easier to start a book than to find the motivation to put on a pair of running shoes and run around in the cold rain.
I thought I'd do something different to ring in 2009 and come up with a list of resolutions that some of your favorite literary characters might make.
New Year's Resolutions of Your Favorite Literary Characters:
1. Ms. Haversham (Great Expectations): change out of wedding dress
2. Bridget Jones (Bridget Jones Diary): spend less time obsessing over Mark Darcy in diary and more time pursuing him
3. Dewey Readmore Books (Dewey: The Small-Town the Library Cat who Touched the World): eat more yogurt, sleep in more laps
4. Stephanie Plum (Fearless Fourteen): finally choose between Joe and Ranger and settle down, stop wrecking cars, buy Lula some clothes
5. Bella (The Twilight Series): grow a backbone, dump Edward, and date Jacob
6. Gollum (Lord of the Rings): Cold turkey on the ring (Thanks, Steve C!)
So pop some champagne and crack open a good book. Happy New Year!
